The Grapefruit Diet

The Grapefruit Diet has had much commentary over the years and has met with varying opinions. Most opinion, however, seems to be of a skeptical nature. This view states that any loss of weight brought about by this diet is not related to the grapefruit or grapefruit juice consumed. Instead, any success achieved is attributed to more general changes in eating and/or exercise levels. There is certainly no denying the fact that grapefruit is a healthy food, being high in fiber and vitamins, and relatively low in calories. At the same time, however, the greater claims being made by the proponents of this diet do not have the scientific research evidence to back them up. The claims that grapefruit or grapefruit juice possess some kind of unique and significant fat-burning or metabolism-stimulating effect remain to be proved. An interesting element in the history of the Grapefruit Diet is the urban myth that has grown around it suggesting it is not only approved by but also was created by the Mayo Clinic. These claims have been repeatedly and explicitly denied by that clinic.
