The Cabbage Soup Diet The cabbage soup diet has been a popular diet plan that tends to focus on rapid, short-term weight loss. The basic principle is that the individual's diet consists, for 7 days, of unlimited amounts of cabbage soup. Thus the cabbage soup diet, if adhered to, would indeed result in an immediate loss of weight as a result of the severely restricted caloric intake imposed. However, beyond the very short term, this diet not only becomes very difficult to keep, it also provides inadequate basic nutrition. Opinions vary with regard to this diet. While some criticize its short term nature, others report making a good start with the cabbage soup diet, and then progressing on to a more sustainable eating pattern. There are also varying interpretations of the actual eating plan, with some approaches adding an allowance of some additional basic food items in addition to the actual cabbage soup.
